If you want to move forward, you need to start taking ownership for everything that happens in your life. You have to stop blaming other people and put it back on yourself. Whatever happens to you is ALWAYS your fault. Over the past year, I’ve made a habit out of putting the blame back on myself when things don’t go as planned. The improvements and progress I have seen over this period have been huge! By taking responsibly, I’m able to better analyse the outcome and learn from my failures. It allows you to ask ‘What can I do differently…

If you’re one of those people who are really active in creating their own content but never take the time to start a conversation, it’s time to make a change. You know the kind. Never engaging with their audience other than a simple ‘like’ on posts. Just liking everything in their Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and Medium feed in the hopes that people will follow them and never moving to a level of actually starting a conversation. Sound familiar? If it’s you, it stops today. I want to touch on one of the most important aspects on starting a new business…

I’ve been wanting to write this post for a little while and I’ve briefly touched on it in the past with my story about sacrifice, but I think it’s time to really focus on the truth about chasing your goals and being 100% in. I’ve been speaking to a couple of people over the past week about this topic and it’s been really interesting to find their perspective on the subject and here’s mine. Social Life You cannot expect to reach your goals if you continue to have a social life. There I said it. If you think for one second…

What’s the most important thing you’ve ever learnt? Think really hard. It could be what you learnt in school, although I highly doubt it. Or is it how to start up a business? Maybe it’s how to stick to a plan and avoid procrastination. I’ve learnt a lot of lessons this year. Hard one’s. Like the need to get rid of toxic people and the importance of learning to say ‘no’ – even if it’s your family! But these don’t even come close to what I think is the number one thing that everyone needs to learn. So here it…

Competitors pop up everywhere. Just when you think you’ve found them all, you find another one. Stop getting the feeling like your business is over every time you find one! Back when we first had the idea for OAKTRAV, we scoured the internet for possible competitors. We found two and we thought we’d found them all. Naively stopping our search there. Over the course of the year, we’ve been exposed to an additional 13 and every single time we found one I took it a little to close to heart. I felt threatened and immediately began deconstructing each business. Being…

I’ve had so many ‘good ideas’ over the years that I’ve lost count. I say ‘good ideas’ because it turns out, they really weren’t good at all but my thinking is if I come up with enough eventually I’ll get a winner. If you’re like me, they will generally come to you at about 3:00am and hopefully you’ve got a notepad and pen next to your bed. OAKTRAV was no different. It was 3:00am, I woke up with an idea for a travel booking site. I wrote it down and messaged one of my co-founders the next morning. Now, for…

Does anyone else get the impression that people think it’s cool to fail? It’s gotten to the point where people seem to be looking for failure. Are you silly? Why would you do that? People are advertising and constantly talking about how much they’ve failed, what they’ve failed at, how they failed. To me, all that says is you gave up, you quit, you walked away. It’s not courageous, it’s not something to be proud of. You gave up. What’s important is HOW you overcame that failure. Did you try again? Did you keep pushing? Because the second you stop…

I’ve been really getting into a social media platform called Medium. A quick description is that it’s a blogging platform but has a social aspect too. Meaning you can find other people and articles based off your interests. You can also comment, like, etc like a normal blog but I like the fact that all articles can be easily found. Anyway, I found an article that raised the question ‘If self-love was selfish?’ and it got me thinking, where is the line between self-improvement and selfishness? It would have taken me about 1 minute to come to a conclusion… There…

The funny thing about starting an internet based company is that you actually need someone on board who knows how to build a website. Fun fact: I have no idea, apart from picking a WordPress template. My other 2 co-founders are in the same boat. We all have our own strengths and web development is not one of them. As you may have guessed this was a pretty big flaw in our plan to take over the travel social media world. We started planning. Marketing Plan, tick! Budget, tick! What posters will we have in our office, tick! Then someone…

Reading books is one of the most important things you need to be doing when chasing your goals. Books are where you will gain most of your knowledge. They give you the ability to learn from other people’s experiences and in turn allow you to alter your way of life to ensure you keep moving forward. I used to be the kind of person who would openly tell people how much ‘I hate reading’ I just didn’t see the point. I would have preferred watching TV over reading. If this sounds like you, you need to change. Every time you…
