I’ve had so many ‘good ideas’ over the years that I’ve lost count. I say ‘good ideas’ because it turns out, they really weren’t good at all but my thinking is if I come up with enough eventually I’ll get a winner. If you’re like me, they will generally come to you at about 3:00am and hopefully you’ve got a notepad and pen next to your bed. OAKTRAV was no different. It was 3:00am, I woke up with an idea for a travel booking site. I wrote it down and messaged one of my co-founders the next morning. Now, for…

I’ve spent a shit load of wasted time staring at to-do lists trying to figure out what to do next. I put absolutely every single little thing on my list, some weeks it has over 50 things on it. Some things have been on there for months, some a couple of days. There’s a lot of stuff on there but I know exactly what to do next. I spend time on prioritising my to-do list. I never used to do this. I used to do the most attractive activities first and basically miss out on huge opportunities due to putting…

Does anyone else get the impression that people think it’s cool to fail? It’s gotten to the point where people seem to be looking for failure. Are you silly? Why would you do that? People are advertising and constantly talking about how much they’ve failed, what they’ve failed at, how they failed. To me, all that says is you gave up, you quit, you walked away. It’s not courageous, it’s not something to be proud of. You gave up. What’s important is HOW you overcame that failure. Did you try again? Did you keep pushing? Because the second you stop…

I’ve been really getting into a social media platform called Medium. A quick description is that it’s a blogging platform but has a social aspect too. Meaning you can find other people and articles based off your interests. You can also comment, like, etc like a normal blog but I like the fact that all articles can be easily found. Anyway, I found an article that raised the question ‘If self-love was selfish?’ and it got me thinking, where is the line between self-improvement and selfishness? It would have taken me about 1 minute to come to a conclusion… There…

The funny thing about starting an internet based company is that you actually need someone on board who knows how to build a website. Fun fact: I have no idea, apart from picking a WordPress template. My other 2 co-founders are in the same boat. We all have our own strengths and web development is not one of them. As you may have guessed this was a pretty big flaw in our plan to take over the travel social media world. We started planning. Marketing Plan, tick! Budget, tick! What posters will we have in our office, tick! Then someone…

My verdict is bloggers have it tough! I started blogging about a year ago to see the challenges bloggers face when building their presence and I’ll tell you what, I found plenty! I started with the idea that I would post twice a week and that would only take a couple of hours. Seems reasonable, do some writing and upload the stories. Pfffffttt you wish jellyfish. Try every day! There’s a lot more to blogging then what everyone sees. First I had to set up the website, then pick a template (this alone took almost a week), then customize it…

OAKTRAV is a new social media platform created solely for the travelling community. There will be no more need to join specific travel groups or only contact each other through text message, only to find the friendship dies out. All of OAKTRAV’s community will be full of keen travellers wanting to share and express all the wonderful places they’ve visited throughout the world. The OAKTRAV founders discovered that it’s next to impossible for good quality travel bloggers to get noticed due to the expensive advertisements needed to reach all your followers. There are so many amazing travel bloggers working countless…

I’ve been working along side an amazing team over the past year to build a social media platform dedicated to bringing travellers together. Out of all the lessons I’ve learnt over this time period, I want to focus on TRUST. Not trust in the people I’ve spent countless hours with developing a new business (even though this is one of the most important aspects), no, I mean TRUST IN THE PROCESS! I heard a while back that you have to love the process. Tick. This one was easy. Late nights, seven days a week, all year round. Giving up sleep…

Possibly one of the most regular things that came out of my mouth growing up – “I hate books!” I had no interest in them and why would I? I grew up with computers, Playstations, Ipods, all the fun stuff. They had moving images, they flashed and they made sounds. Books! Books were boring. I had to pay attention. They didn’t make cool noises and no one ever spoke about the recent books they read. I now know how stupid this was of me. The amount of stuff I’ve learnt just from reading books would be close to the amount…

When used properly, a mentor can help you fast track to your goal. I’ve never understood the importance of a mentor until recently. I always had people I could go to with questions but I never utilized the opportunity. Now, I know the importance of having someone you can go to with questions or to bounce ideas off. I used to be the kind of person who never understood why it was so important to go to university, and to be honest, I still don’t. I believe that everything can be taught while on the job. I believe you need…
